What is Dual Clutch Transmission or DCT? Everyone seems to want one and they seem to be replacing manual transmission in more and more high performance vehicles, but very few seem to understand what it is. To clear this up therefore, let’s look at some of the things you need to know about DCT.

To start with, DCT is both automated and manual transmission. It works much like most automatic transmissions with the PRND gear selector choices without a clutch pedal. Instead, you get paddle shifters. This essentially gives you control on when you want to change your gears while also giving you the option to pay no mind and just let the computer decide when to change gears. We’re assuming that you already know that automatic transmission works exactly like the latter.

So, why DCT? Well, the answer has to do largely with speed. With a DCT, you can change gears much faster than manual transmissions without being completely in the mercy of automatic transmissions. This basically adds up to just a few milliseconds in difference, but that’s all you would need depending on what you want the car for. If you are in the racing scene especially, a few milliseconds can make a world of difference between winning and losing.

More than that, there is also the question of fuel efficiency since DCT cars often have a high rating on that, at least when compared to either automatic or manual transmissions. DCT is also much simpler while still offering incredible performance.

On that note, there are a few things about DCT cars that can be considered drawbacks. One is the price because DCT cars are inevitably going to be more expensive than their manual or automatic counterparts. Two is the break in experience for traditional car enthusiasts. After all, manual transmission has long been considered a badge of honor among those who consider themselves true car fans.

Still, the choice ultimately rests on you. Do you want the complete experience while keeping it simple and worry free? Or do you want your driving experience traditional wherein every single shift in gear actually means something?

More than that, you also have to ask yourself if you are willing to dough out the extra cash just to have DCT when a car with a manual transmission or automatic transmission can drive just as well if you’re not racing. Again it’s your choice.
